[R]:
Hello! Hello! And, welcome back everyone! So glad you could join us for our first CLCE podcast of the year. I am Ryan Newton as you probably remember from last year’s podcast series. I’m the graduate assistant for leadership here in the CLCE and as usual I am joined by a very special guest today I will let him introduce himself.
[A]:
My name is Angel Garcia, and I am the associate director for all things civic engagement here at the University of South Florida. Very excited to be here with my special man, Ryan.
[R]:
And we just want to welcome you back to school. We hope you’re having a first, great first week or two! And Angel is going to talk to you a little about some of the exciting opportunities we have coming up with the CLCE. Now that school year has started, we’ve got things underway and we’re really excited about some these opportunities we have for you to get involved and kind of plug away at some of the things that you are passionate about.
[A]:
So one thing about being a student here at USF is coming into your semester for the first time, or maybe your second third, or twentieth time (however long you’ve been here at the University) is that there’s always a lot of entities and organizations and just, just ways to get involved out there. And sometimes you get so lost in the crowd and so lost in the ocean that, one thing that I wanted to provide you all an opportunity to learn about today is an amazing program formerly called “The Alternative Spring Break Program”, formerly known as “The Alternative Breaks Program”, and now revamped and “BULLverize” into what we call “The Bulls Service Breaks Program.” Basically what it is, it’s, it’s a program that allows you the opportunity to travel the world both domestically and internationally, and in two thousand and fifteen, to the moon. an opportunity to, to travel at these global…I, I shouldn’t have, that’s, that’s just a pretty bad joke man I know. If you’re still with me, I promise you the jokes do get better and you will learn more about this program. Just hold on tight.
[R]:
Don’t tune out yet!
[A]:
Not yet! So, so, the “The Bull Service Breaks Program” basically gives you an opportunity to serve weekends in the fall, a weeklong trip in the winter, or a weeklong trip during the spring and summer breaks. And what you do is you choose a social issue that you’re really passionate about. So, if homelessness is something you’re really passionate about, here is a service site, service trip just for you. And we have over 16 different social issues you can choose, and what you do is, you choose your social issue and we then develop 16 to18 different sites and we attach these social issues and we send you somewhere pretty amazing in the world. Now, the only thing is you don’t find out where you’re going to until you’re selected and you are at our first meet and greet which is “the Revelation.” So, you might be sitting in a room thinking you’re going to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, but oh no, you’re on your way to New York. Or maybe you’re thinking ‘you know what, I’m going to New York” life is pretty good but then we just drop it on you and tell you you’re going to Belize. So there is a lot of amazing things this program does, and it benefits you in so many ways, which you can see the world, you can experience things outside of your normal community here at USF, it’s also something that is going to change you as a person. When you’re actually able to be educated on a social issue that you’re interested in, being able to provide direct service for it and then go with a group of 9 other people, 10 other people, and create new friendships and new family ties out there and just see the fruits of your labor. So if you’re interested in the BULLs Service Break Program please go to leadandserve.usf.edu “Bulls service breaks” and apply today
[R]:
Now let me ask you Angel: Who, who can get involved in this? Does it just have to be, do you have to be an undergrad to do this, can anybody do this?
[A]:
Anyone who is registered as student here at USF, so if you’re an undergraduate or graduate student, you’re able to be a part of this. Apply.
[R]:
And what about site leaders? I know that there are different applications right?
[A]:
That’s right, that’s right there’s two site leaders per trip. So, there’s site leader applications and there’s participant applications. And I do want to stress that these trips though we try as best as we can to keep them at a low, low cost, there is a nominal fee for these trips, so just keep that in mind, but more information’s on our website for the prices
[R]:
And what was that website one more time?
[A]:
It’s leadandserve.usf.edu
Awesome. Well, we want to thank Angel for being a guest here. We hope you’ll take an opportunity to visit the website, encourage you to definitely sign up and register for the BSB trips they’re a lot of fun. I’m looking forward to going on one this semester as well, so. We thank you for tuning in again this week on the podcast and we look forward to hearing you back next week we’ll have another guest an all new topic and I’ll look forward to hearing all from you then! Thanks have a great one and enjoy your first week.
